I am lucky enough to have become a father during 2021. My daughter is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’ve never been more tired or more happy in my life.
Sometimes parenthood is the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced. Sometimes… not so much. There are a lot of unexpected, difficult, and down-right nasty things that come along with being a parent.
When my wife was expecting, we received non-stop advice from people who had grown kids, young kids, and some who don’t have kids. The advice kept pouring out of the woodwork!
The surprising part is that at least 50% of the advice we received was not useful for us. Either the other parents had different styles or their kids were polar opposites to our kid. We had a lot of noise coming our way but not much of it was actionable.
This is something I’ve seen with a lot of business owners. Everyone and their mother has an opinion and wants to offer their two-cents on what you should do. All of that comes from a very heartfelt and good place but usually doesn’t mean much.
To make sure a business (and a kid) can succeed, takes a lot more than just some sage advice, it takes an immense amount of effort and working through a lot of the unexpected, difficult, and down-right nasty things that a business and it’s owners have to go through.
However, in my parenting adventure, I am not alone. My wife is an amazing partner who does a tremendous amount of work and planning.
